God, who assumed their nature in order that His voice might have, so to speak, an articulation which they could understand, would make plain to them that He was speaking, and as He called them to Himself, faithful hearts would come. The prophecy did not imply that any one of those who learned had seen the Father. No. In the very nature of things this was impossible. He which is of God, of one substance with the Father, He hath seen the Father. Had man been able to see the Father, then he would not have needed the revelation. Had not the Son seen the Father, then He would not have been able to give the revelation. Our Lord is thus raised above all the limits of earthly teachers. As being man, He is fitted to speak with man, but He is fitted to speak of the things of God because He has seen God and is God. No teacher can teach truly beyond what he has himself experienced. If he does teach, he can otherwise only teach at second hand. The capacity of Christ for teaching about God, involves therefore the truth that He is God. He has seen God. No created intelligence could see God. God is as far beyond the sight of the Cherubim, as He is beyond the sight of any of the sons of men. Jesus is able to teach truly of God, because He has seen the Father with the true vision of Coequal Consubstantial Deity. Unless there can be some other Mediator who can establish his pretensions to an equal claim of Divine intuition, there can be no other teacher save Himself. If all are to be taught of God, all must come to Jesus. Jesus is the true, the only Teacher, because He is the true, the only Mediator. Other teachers may appeal to man's inner consciousness, but they cannot elevate it. Jesus tells of that which He Himself...
